Five candidates progress to next stage of Archbishop election

The candidates who have received over five percent of the votes in today’s nomination election are official candidates in the Archbishop election on 18 May. Those going forward to the next stage are:

Bishop Martin Modéus, Linköping Diocese, 29.25 percent
Bishop Johan Dalman, Strängnäs Diocese, 20.07 percent
Bishop Mikael Mogren, Västerås Diocese, 18.71 percent
Bishop Karin Johannesson, Uppsala Diocese, 13.27 percent
Bishop Fredrik Modéus, Växjö Diocese, 11.22 percent

Total number of votes: 756 (Diocesan Boards, Chapters and the Central Board of the Church of Sweden: 249. Priests, deacons and electors in Uppsala Diocese: 507.)

The results of today’s nomination election are preliminary. The final results will be confirmed on 6 April, after which there is an appeal period of one week.

The full list of results from today’s nomination election, including figures for the diocese and deanery in Uppsala Diocese, will be published once the final results have been confirmed at www.svenskakyrkan.se/arkebiskopsval-2022.

Candidate hearing on 22 April
On 22 April, 10.00am–4.00pm, a hearing will be organised in Uppsala with the candidates ahead of the Archbishop election. The hearing will be broadcast via a live webcast, but is also open to accredited journalists/photographers. Press invitations and further details will follow.

Archbishop election 18 May
The first round of voting in the Archbishop election will take place on 18 May. If at this point one of the candidates receives more than 50 percent of the votes, the Church of Sweden will have elected a new Archbishop. Otherwise there will be a second round on 8 June between the two candidates who received the most votes.

Who votes in the Archbishop election
The Archbishop is elected by members of the Central Board of the Church of Sweden and the members of the Diocesan Boards and the Chapters of the Church of Sweden’s 13 dioceses.

Since the Archbishop will also be the Bishop of Uppsala Diocese, the deacons and priests of Uppsala Diocese who hold a position in Uppsala Diocese are also eligible to vote, as well as an equal number of electors who have been appointed by the parishes of the diocese. In order to ensure that Uppsala Diocese does not decide the election alone, these votes are divided by ten.

What happens after an Archbishop has been appointed
Archbishop Antje Jackelén will lay down her staff during a service at Uppsala Cathedral on 30 October. She will remain in post up until that date.

The new Archbishop will be received at a service at Uppsala Cathedral on 4 December.

During the period between the laying down of the staff and the receiving of the new Archbishop, other bishops will manage the majority of the Archbishop’s duties. This is regulated in the Church Ordinance and concerns, among other things, the roles of Chair of the Central Board of the Church of Sweden and the Doctrinal Commission of the General Synod, and the fulfilment of the Archbishop’s role in the Bishops’ Conference.

The duties of the Archbishop in Uppsala Diocese are managed by the Bishop of Uppsala Diocese, apart from in the Chapter which has a designated deputy.
