Om Stiftsgården

Området runt Stiftsgården har anor från tidigt 1500-tal, där det första prästbostället fanns. När gamla stenkyrkan byttes ut mot nuvarande Landskyrkan år 1800 blev det också aktuellt att uppföra en ny kyrkoherdebostad i närheten av kyrkan. Detta gjordes med Säbro biskopsgård utanför Härnösand som förebild när Nils Ström var kyrkoherde i Skellefteå. Det är den gård vi ser idag. 

Runt gården har genom århundradena människor rörts i livets alla skeenden och det har inte varit utan dramatik. Under några händelserika dagar 1809 var gården intagen av ryska styrkor som passerade Skellefteå på väg söderut, och under nödåren på 1860-talet blev gården en knutpunkt för nödhjälp till svältande befolkning.

1964 bildades Luleå stifts Stiftsgård området blev ett hem för hela Luleå stift, en central plats för kurser och fortbildningar. Där hölls utbildningar av olika slag, konfirmandläger och retreater. Under 1990-talet och fram till 2024 var gården ett omtyckt kurs- och  konferensställe med hotell för gäster från hela landet. Efter en sviktande efterfrågan lades konferensverksamheten ned och gården hyrs sedan 2024 av Skellefteå pastorat som nu skapar förutsättningar för att den historiska gården återigen ska bli en central mötesplats för människor i hela pastoratet. Bland annat ses kulturevenemang, konfirmandläger och ungdomsverksamhet i huset. En rättighetsmottagning för socialt arbete har startats och framåt finns också planer på ett utvecklat arbete med idella krafter där fantasin får sätta gränserna för hur husen kan användas. 

De mänskliga mötena har alltid varit i centrum och ska så fortsätta att vara. 

About Stiftsgården

The area around Stiftsgården has roots dating back to the early 1500s, when the very first clergy residence was established here. When the old stone church was replaced by today’s Skellefteå Parish Church in 1800, a new vicarage was also built nearby. Inspired by the bishop’s residence in Säbro outside Härnösand, the house was erected during the time of vicar Nils Ström — and that is the building we see today.

Over the centuries, life in all its forms has passed through the vicarage gates, not without its share of drama. In 1809, during a few turbulent days, the property was taken over by Russian troops on their way south. In the famine years of the 1860s, it became a hub for relief efforts to support the starving local population.

In 1964, the Diocese of Luleå established Stiftsgården as a gathering place for the entire diocese. It became a central venue for courses, training, confirmation camps, and retreats. From the 1990s until 2024, the property was well known as a popular course and conference center with a hotel that welcomed guests from all over Sweden. When demand for conferences declined, that activity came to a close, and since 2024 the property has been leased by the Skellefteå parish. The vision today is to once again make this historic site a central meeting place for the whole parish. Cultural events, youth activities, and confirmation camps are already taking place here. A social justice reception center has been established 2026, and there are future plans to expand activities with the help of volunteers — with imagination as the only limit for how the buildings can be used.

Human encounters have always been at the heart of Stiftsgården — and always will be.
