Landa Church – History and Interior
Landa Church was built around the turn of the 12th to 13th century, when Halland was part of Denmark. It is believed that the church was constructed with the assistance of Cistercian monks from Ås Abbey.
Originally, the church had a separate bell tower, but when the present stone tower was built in 1795, the bells were moved into it. At the same time, an organ gallery and a room at the base of the tower were added. Because the tower was built of heavy stone and the church stands on clay soil, the tower has gradually subsided. From a distance, its noticeable lean can be seen.
The wall paintings were rediscovered during the restoration of the church in 2001. These frescoes date from the early 16th century. The two best-preserved paintings depict Jesus at the age of twelve in the Temple and Jesus at the feast in Bethany, where Mary, the sister of Lazarus, anointed Jesus' feet with precious ointment.
The pulpit dates from 1699 and was created by the woodcarver Hans Hultman. Its front panels feature sculptures representing the four Evangelists.
The baptismal font, carved from granite, has a medieval appearance but actually dates from 1915.
The dove above the baptismal font was created by the artist Birgitta Jannesson from Frillesås and was dedicated on Pentecost Sunday in 2002.
The altarpiece dates from the early 17th century and was donated to the church by Onsala Parish towards the end of that century.
The ceiling paintings date from 1804 and were created by P. Hallberg from Halmstad and Jacob Magnus Hultgren from Varberg.
The organ is a mechanical pipe organ with fourteen stops, built by Tostareds Orgelfabrik in 1981.
