This forest is called the big forest on old maps. It is just such a place children were warned to go out in. Here lived elves, giants, trolls, nymphs and other beings. But where are they now? Perhaps the trolls were petrified by the sun’s rays and became large boulders. How else to explain the enormous stones found in the most unexpected places?
Troll were not always ugly and horrible creatures, sometimes incredibly beautiful people in colorful and fancy clothes who lived in the forest.
A forest nymph was recognize by its beautiful, often scantily clad apperance. She has an opening in her back and a tail. So if you meet a person half-naked in the woods, try to get a look at the person’s back.
All forest beings have in common that they want us people something. Either they want to teach us something about how to take care of nature, or they want us to leave the place alone. And not everyone is nice, on the contrary, there were many creatures in the forest who were ready to hurt us, as the Neck that could fool us into a stream with his violin playing.
Many of the tales of the forest’s was to scare children so they wouldn’t venture too far into the forest, to teach them to avoid other dangerous places marshes and canyons, and to teach them to have respect for nature and all living things. Tales was also a way to explain why nature behaved as it did, why the harvest in some years was lost or why the animals on the farm was suddenly worried. If you upheld a good relationship with the forest beings they would let us be and sometimes even help us.
A time not so long ago these creatures of the forest stopped a road through a forest in Dalarna. Residents refused to build a road where it was intended - for the forest belonged to the forest beings, and they dared not offend them, and the road was never built.
So surely the forest beings exist still today. Open your mind and try to see and imagine what your ancestors thought they saw here in the forest. Is there an occasional gnome still lurking here? Perhaps it is a matter of which perspective you apply?
