The Swedish Burial Ground
At the Swedish Church’s Burial Ground in Brookwood Cemetery, there are many graves. Some are old, dating from the 18th century, whilst others are more recent. It is a beautiful part of Brookwood’s sizeable Cemetery, with large rhododendron bushes all around, an avenue of birch trees, a stone path running through the middle and some welcoming wooden benches to sit on.
Renovation plans
The cemetery needs to be looked after and now it’s time to make some big changes to keep our cemetery beautiful. The stone path needs to be replaced, because over time it has become uneven due to the large roots and a thick covering of moss which in some places is difficult to remove. Also, a large old tree stump needs to be removed from the circular flowerbed in the middle of the pathway, this will make room for something better and more beautiful.
The idea is to turn that circle into a so-called Memorial Ground, i.e. a place where you can have your ashes spread directly in the ground, without a gravestone. This means that the relatives will know where the ashes are, but there is no grave that needs to be maintained. In Sweden, Memorial Grounds are found in all cemeteries and is today a common way for burials.
