Welcome to Linköping Cathedral

Information about Linköpings Domkyrka

A church in the form of a cross was built here in the 12th century, approximately following the architecture that had been used for the church at Vreta Kloster. The first church became too small after 100 years, and it was decided that a bigger one should be built. The enormous building project was started in the 1230s while the old church was still in place, used for worship every day. The little church was finally taken down and the stones used in the new church.

It took 300 years to build the place of worship in which you are now standing. The north door is the oldest part of the church, together with the Roman arch in the choir, where the large crucifix of triumph hangs. The tower is 107 m high and was added much later, it was completed in 1885-86.
