A Letter to Every Household from the Church of Sweden Bishops

Tomorrow, Thursday, every household will receive a letter from the Bishops of the Church of Sweden. This mailing marks the largest single event of the campaign entitled A Place for Reflection that started a couple of days before Christmas with advertisements in the daily newspapers, out of doors and on the cinema screens, and it marks the end of the campaign. The letter is signed by the respective diocesan bishop-.

"This letter signals directly and clearly the Church of Sweden's will to engage in contact with people", says Klas Hansson, the Director of the Archbishop's Office.

On 1st January, the Church of Sweden became a free denomination, independent of the state. The campaign entitled A Place for Reflection is part of the Church's efforts to disseminate information about its new role among the general public in Sweden, regardless of whether individuals have strong or weak links with the church.

The letter that will reach every household tomorrow gives information about the Christian faith and the role of the Church of Sweden as an independent denomination and ends with God's blessing.

"The Church of Sweden is an open National Church, and the purpose of the letter is to invite people to the community of the local parishes", Klas Hansson says. The letter confirms that all who belong to the Church of Sweden continue their membership even now that the change of relations to the state has taken place. The Church's relationship to the state does not effect its relationship to its members.

As from tomorrow, Thursday 13th January, the letter will be available on the Church of Sweden website: www.svenskakyrkan.se It has also been translated to several minority languages.
