THE ORDINATION OF PRIESTS
|
|
|
The candidates having been examined and accepted by the Domkapitel (legal diocesan body exercising oversight) the ordination takes place in the Cathedral of the Diocese. The order of service follows the order for Ordination of Priests, the order for Holy Communion with Ordination of Priests or the order for Solemn Sunday Service with Ordination of Priests. The ordination service may replace the main Sunday Service of the Cathedral. The Bishop, who appoints the assistants, presides at the service. Besides priests, deacons and lay people may be called to be assistants. If the ordinary bishop of the diocese is unable to attend the service, the another bishop whom the Domkapitel has invited, should preside.

Blessed is the people, O Lord, that can rejoice in you:
they shall walk in the light of your countenance.
From all tongues and nations, God gathers his people
and by baptism he unites us with Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Christ has died for all people and has risen
that we, and all his faithful people,
should live with him in his kingdom.
With all the Christian church on earth,
we are called by the Holy Spirit
to be holy and to be kept safe in the orthodox faith.
Daily and generously God forgives us all our sins,
so that set free, we may give him thanks and praise,
and serve him in obedience.
Let us pray and confess:

Introduction

|
AB
|
The church is God's people, the body of Christ, a temple built of living stones, with Christ as the cornerstone. Among the members of the people of God, who are all called, by baptism, to proclaim the Gospel to the world, the priest has a special responsibility.
A priest proclaims the word of God and administers the sacraments
lead the people in prayer and adoration in worship
teach and provide pastoral care
and so be a shepherd for the flock of God.
In his ministry, a priest shall live as a servant of Christ
and be open for people's needs.
His mind should be turned towards God and all creation.
In faithfulness and wisdom, the priest should provide for God's people
what they need to be cleansed and to mature in faith,
so that the love of God may be visible in the world.
The ministry of a priest will now be committed to you.
Consider those whom you meet with care and reverence.
Seek the will of God together with them
and strive to let your faith, your life and your teaching become one whole.

Profess now, together with us, the holy Christian faith.
|
|
|
Candidates
|
I believe in one God,
|
|
|
C
|
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
I believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord the Giver of Life
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped
and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins,
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O God, we give you thanks

For our salvation, he became obedient unto death
even death on the cross.
Therefore you have exalted him above all others.
Throughout the world he gathers for you a people to serve you
that your name may be kept holy
and your will be done.
You appoint among us servants of your Gospel

the church be renewed and creation restored.
From you we receive them
whom we now ordain to the office of a priest.

Grant them the confidence, power and patience that they need
and keep them always close to you.
Grant them encouragement and joy in their work.
Deepen their faith, love and hope.

who with you and the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns,

Holy Communion with Ordination of Priests
|
|
|
The Introduction follows the order for Ordination of Priests until after the Introit. Then the order for Holy Communion is followed from the Kyrie until after the Sermon. The following prayer may be used as a collect:
|
|
|
B
|
God, our Father,
You sent your Son for the salvation of the world
Send today labourers to gather your harvest,
so that your Spirit may, by the word and the sacraments,
call, enlighten and sanctify your church.
Through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
|
|
|
C
|
Amen
|
|
|
After the sermon, the choir may sing and notices may be given. The Service then continues with a hymn, during which the Bishop and the assistants move to the altar. The order for Ordination of Priests is then followed from the announcement of the mandate to the postlude. The readings are omitted.
