Notes and instructions

THE ORDINATION OF A BISHOP

The Ordination of a Bishop takes places either according to the Form Ordination of a Bishop, according to Holy Communion with Ordination of a Bishop or according to the order for Solemn Sunday Service with Ordination of a Bishop. The Ordination takes place in the Cathedral of Uppsala or in the Cathedral in the Diocese to which the Bishop Elect is appointed. The Service may replace the main Sunday Service of the Cathedral. The Archbishop, who appoints the assistants, presides at the service. Besides bishops, priests, deacons and lay people may be called to be assistants. If the Archbishop is unable to attend the service, the senior bishop in office should preside.

B Blessed is the people, O Lord, that can rejoice in you: they shall walk in the light of your countenance. From all tongues and nations, God gathers his people and by baptism he unites us with Jesus Christ, our Lord. Christ has died for all people and has risen that we, and all his faithful people, should live with him in his kingdom. With all the Christian church on earth, we are called by the Holy Spirit to be holy and to be kept safe in the orthodox faith. Daily and generously God forgives us all our sins, so that set free, we may give him thanks and praise, and serve him in obedience. Let us pray and confess:

The Promises

Introduction

  AB

The church is God's people, the body of Christ, a temple built of living stones, with Christ as the cornerstone. Among the members of the people of God, who are all called, by baptism, to proclaim the Gospel to the world, the bishop has a special responsibility.
A bishop shall have oversight over the diocese and the parishes, and shall see to it that the word of God is proclaimed purely and clearly, that the sacraments are rightly administered, and that acts of mercy are undertaken according to the will of God. A bishop shall ordain and visit, seek out, consult, listen and take decisions and in everything that he does, he shall strengthen the people of God in their calling to interpret the signs of the times and to witness to God's great works on behalf of all creation. In his ministry, a bishop shall live as a servant of Christ and be a shepherd for God's flock. With watchfulness and wisdom, the bishop shall serve the unity in Christ to the building up of the Church and renewal in the Spirit so that the love of God may be visible in the world. The task of a bishop is no committed to you. Consider those whom you meet with care and reverence. Seek the will of God together with them and strive to let your faith, your life and your teaching become one whole.

The Questions

AB Will you, in the name of the Triune God, accept the ministry of a bishop and exercise this ministry to the glory of God, the building up of the Church so that God's will may be realised throughout the world?
  B E Yes
AB Will you stand in firm in the faith of the church and defend it, will you ensure that the word of God is proclaimed with purity and clarity, as it is written in Holy Scriptures and testified in the confession of our church, and that the sacraments are properly administered?
  B E Yes
AB Will you, in your ministry, follow and protect the order of our church and further unity in Christ?
  B E Yes
AB Will you live among people as a witness to the love of God and of the mystery of reconciliation
  B E Yes

The Affirmation

  AB
Now, before God ad in the presence of this congregation affirm your promises.
  B E
I, NN, will with the help of God and trusting in the grace of God live according to these promises.
  AB
May God, who has began the good work in you
bring it to perfection, so that his good will may take effect. In the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
*

The Creed

AB Profess now, together with us, the holy Christian faith.
  E B I believe in one God,
C the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
I believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord the Giver of Life who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayer for the Church

One of the assisting bishops leads the Prayer for the Church. Music, see page xxx. Alternatively another prayer or an informally worded prayer may be used.
  AB Let us pray

  C Have mercy on us.

B For willing servants to work for your kingdom for your blessing on those to be ordained to the service of your Spirit in the Church for joy and faithfulness to the end we cry to you, O Lord
C Hear us, O Lord our God.
B For justice and peace in the world for respect for the gifts of creation for a future for the poorest of the world we cry to you, O Lord
C Hear us, O Lord our God.

AB O God, we give you thanks that in your great love for us men, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to be our Saviour, the shepherd of our souls and our high priest. Throughout the world he gathers for you a people to serve you that your name may be kept holy and your will be done. You appoint among us servants for your Gospel that people may come to faith, the church be renewed and creation restored. From you we receive him whom we now ordain to the office of a bishop. Lord, bless NN with your Holy Spirit and accept him into your service as a bishop in your church.
AB O God, we ask you:
C grant this bishop perseverance in the service of the Gospel, faithfulness and wisdom in the care of your people. Grant him the confidence, power and patience that he needs and keep him always close to you. Deepen his faith, love and hope. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
