Notes and instructions

COMMUNION FOR THE SICK

When a priest is called to give communion to the sick and a short form is required, the following order of service may be used. On other occasions, when communion to the sick is given at home or when the mass is celebrated in a hospital or other institution, a richer form is appropriate, such as the Sunday Mass, page xxx, or the Weekday Mass, page xxx. Readings, hymns and prayers then follow the rhythm of the liturgical year.

Short Bible Reading

Depending on the circumstances, a short commentary on the Bible reading may be given.

Prayers of Penitence

I confess before you, holy God that I have sinned, often and in many ways in thoughts, words and deeds. Look with mercy on me and forgive me, for Jesus Christ's sake, all my sins.

Absolution

P To you who ask for the forgiveness of your sins I say, on the authority of Jesus Christ, committed unto me : Your sins are forgiven, in the name of the Father and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.. Amen.

The Words of Institution

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the night that he was betrayed took bread, gave you thanks, broke it and gave to his disciples, saying: Take and eat, This is my body which is given for you. Do this, in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, gave you thanks and gave it to the disciples, saying: Drink this, all of you, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, that has been shed for many, for the forgiveness of sin. As often as you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who is in heaven. Let your name be kept holy. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our bread for the day to come. And forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Communion

The possibility of intinction should be noted. If the communicant receives the bread and wine at the same time, the priest says:

P The body and blood of Christ, that was given for you.

Otherwise the priest says::

P The body of Christ, that was given for you. The blood of Christ, that was shed for you.

After the giving of the bread and wine, the priest says:

P You/we have received the Lord Jesus Christ He keep you/us for eternal life. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P We give thanks to you, our God and Father, that through your Son, Jesus Christ, you have instituted this holy sacrament for our comfort and blessing. We ask you, Give us grace, so to celebrate the remembrance of Jesus here on earth, that we be partakers of the heavenly banquet in your kingdom. Amen.

The Blessing

P The Lord bless you and watch over you. The Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord look kindly on you and give you peace; In the Name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
