GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

I Introduction

Psalm

Penitential Psalm

P Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord,
C Lord, hear my voice; Let your ears consider well: the voice of my supplication.
P If you Lord should note what we do wrong: who then O Lord could stand?
C But there is forgiveness with you: so that you shall be feared.
P I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him: and in his word is my hope.
C My soul looks for the Lord: more than watchmen for the morning, more, I say than the watchmen for the morning.
P O Israel trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is ample redemption.
C He will redeem Israel: from the multitude of his sins.
          or
P Have mercy on me O God in your enduring goodness: according to the fullness of your compassion, blot out my offences.
C Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.
P For I acknowledge my rebellion: and my sin is ever before me.
C Against you only have I sinned: and done what is evil in your eyes.
P Hide your face from my sins: and blot out all my iniquities.
C Create in me a clean heart O God: and renew a right spirit within me.
P Do not cast me out of your presence: do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
C O give me the gladness of your help again: and support me with a willing spirit.

Alternatively the penitential psalm may be said in unison.

At the end of the psalm, the priest says

Final Hymn

The Reproaches

My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I led you out of Egypt, from slavery to freedom: you led your Saviour to the cross
Holy is God Holy and strong! Holy immortal One have mercy on us!
For forty years I led you safely through the desert. I fed you with manna from heaven, and brought you to a land of plenty; but you led your Saviour to the cross.
Holy is God Holy and strong! Holy immortal One have mercy on us!
What more could I have done for you? I planted you as my fairest vine, but you yielded only bitterness: when I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink, and you pierced your Saviour with a lance.
Holy is God Holy and strong! Holy immortal One have mercy on us!
I opened the sea before you: but you opened my side with a spear.
My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I gave you saving water from the rock: but you gave me gall and vinegar to drink.
My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I gave you a royal sceptre: but you gave me a crown of thorns.
My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I raised you to the heights of majesty: but you raised me high on a cross.
My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
With eternal love have I loved you: but you raised your Saviour on the cross.
My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
