An Invitation to Prayer
2000

INTRODUCTION

By the Co-Chairmen of the Porvoo Agreement Contact Group

The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it 'to share a common life' and 'to pray for and with one another' (commitment (i)). One way of doing this is for us all to pray in turn for each of the dioceses of our churches, with their bishops.

This booklet lists all the dioceses of each church, giving the names of the diocesan bishop and any suffragan or full-time assistant bishops. [The names of bishops who have indicated their intention to retire during the year are given in square brackets.] The left-hand pages list the dioceses of Finland and England (Provinces of Canterbury and York), while the right-hand pages list those of the other churches. One diocese on each page is allocated to each week.

Those using the booklet are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the bishops and people of the Porvoo churches. For individuals this is more likely to be a weekday, while for congregations it should be the Sunday itself. It is hoped that our cathedrals will make use of this booklet in their own cycles of prayer week by week. Where the Bishop has invited us to pray for a specific intention, this is noted.

In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray in particular for the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Latvia, which has not taken a decision on the Porvoo Declaration, and for the Church of Denmark, whose bishops have not been able to endorse the Declaration but nevertheless wish to maintain and develop their links with the churches which have signed it (see p. 21). Observers from both churches attend all the meetings held under the Agreement.
